Vampire Ball (My book)

This is insane. I???m going insane. This is not happening, and I am most definitely not surrounded by vampires who are bowing down to me and calling me their queen. Nope. Not possible. But as I sit on the throne and look out across the room, over the many people on their knees, with tears of joy in their eyes, I know this is real. I know that this is happening. I think about Nina, who is probably at home in bed asleep after eating a ton of candy, or Jake, who is probably still up playing video games, or maybe even Jamie, who is asleep in her crib with her tiny thumb in her mouth. And, then I think about myself, sitting in the throne, mouth gaping, trying to comprehend how I could be a queen, let alone a vampire queen.
- ???Ugh, I hate Mondays.??? Nina complained. Nina Carter is my best friend. We???ve been together since we were babies. You could pretty much say that we???re sisters. We do almost everything together. Nina is 5???1??? and super-skinny. She has long black wavy hair paired with bright emerald-green eyes that can seem quite intimidating if you don???t know her all that well.
???Yeah, they???re just so boring and??????
???Stupid???? Nina said, completing my sentence.
???Yeah, Stupid.???
Let me formally introduce myself, I am Katie Anderson, seventeen, and in the 11th grade. I have short, blonde hair and brown almond-shaped eyes. I, unlike Nina, am a tall 5???9??? and still have a bit of baby fat on me. (Which mom says will go away anytime soon, but I still don???t find that reassuring.) I am currently living with my mother, and am an only child. My mother doesn???t really speak that much of my dad, so all I know is that they were crazy in love and his parents didn???t approve, so they sent him to military school and she hasn???t seen or heard from him since.
???Hurry up, Katie! We???re going to be late for class!??? Nina said as she started to quicken her pace while worrying about making it in time to science.
???Alright, I got it! God, why don???t we take the bus again????
???Because it???s so over-crowded and smells like sweat! Now, Hurry! I think I heard the first bell!???
Nina started to run to the school in a panic. I started to match my pace with hers, and managed to trip, scraping my knee, and spilling the contents of my book bag everywhere.
Nina, having heard the commotion turned around and tried to quickly help me put everything back in my book bag.
???Nina, just go. I can do this on my own.???
???But-???
???Just, go! I have to go to the nurse and get a band-aid anyways!???
Noticing my knee, Nina sighed and said thank you, turned around, and started running toward the school.
Looking at the remaining stuff on the ground, I groan and slowly start to pick everything up and put it back into my book bag.
That???s when I noticed it, that strange feeling of being watched. I always felt like I was being watched. I had noticed it since I was little. I usually noticed it more when I was alone. It never really bothered me, because I knew whoever it was, wasn???t bad, but exactly the opposite. I knew that they were there to protect me. I don???t know how I know it, I just do. In my mind, I imagine it???s my guardian angel, there to protect me.
After quickly glancing around to see if I could spot whomever it was, I quickly finish picking up my things, and jog the rest of the distance to the school, images of all different kinds of angels passing through my head.
-???Hey Jake, We saved you a seat!??? I half-yelled at him, while waving him over. Lunchtime at Pacific High, can???t get any better than that.
???Thanks, Katie.??? He gave me a soft smile and sat down proceeding to explain all about his costume this year and how he had devised a special plan to get a ton of candy.
???So, What are you guys planning to be for Halloween??? Jake asked through a big bite of his sandwich.
???Eww, Jake! Finish chewing before you talk!??? Nina said with a repulsed look on her face.
???Anyways, I???m going to be a gothic fairy! The costume is soo cute! It???s a long grey and black dress that looks very frayed. It has really long sleeves and a green belt. The wings are really cool too. They???re all black with grey on the tips.??? Nina explained getting all exited.
???Sounds cool.??? It really did, I was always jealous of Nina???s costumes, they were always perfect, and fit her skinny body like a glove. Mine were usually homemade and you couldn???t exactly tell what I was supposed to be. Like last year, I was a witch. It looked more like a black ghost with a pointy hat.
???What about you Katie? What are you going to be???? Nina proceeded to ask me, her bright green eyes staring curiously at me.
???I???m not exactly sure.??? I started to pick at my food, hoping she would just drop the subject completely. Of course, No such luck.
???What do you mean you???re not sure? Halloween is in two days, Katie. Don???t tell me you haven???t gotten a costume! You can???t go trick-or-treating without a costume! It???s tradition!??? She looked at me with a worried expression.
???I never got around to making one, I was busy studying for that big English test. I guess I???m not going to go trick-or-treating this year.??? I shrugged.
It wasn???t that big a deal to me, but it seemed that it was to Nina.
???Not going trick-or-treating!? But, we???ve been going trick-or-treating every year since we were able to eat candy, Katie! Maybe I can help you make a costume or maybe I can bu-???
???No, it???s fine, Nina, really. I think I might stay at home and watch movies, or maybe I???ll go to Justin???s party. He said that we didn???t have to wear costumes.??? Honestly, I didn???t feel like going out in the freezing cold just to get candy, which we could buy at the store. I???m starting to think this holiday was invented by the candy industry.
???You could always come over to my house and play video games with me, Katie.??? Jake said giving me this ???I???m inviting you to be nice, but I know you???ll say no ???cause you don???t like video games??? smile.
???Thanks for the invite but I don???t really enjoy that kind of thing.??? I was starting to imagine the different movies I could watch on Halloween when the bell rang, signaling that lunch was over.
-School at Pacific High is quite boring. It???s always the same. Same schedule. Same food. Same boring classes. Nothing special about it. We never get crazy substitutes that change things around, or mess up what we???re supposed to do for the day, causing there to be no pop quiz, or even be the nicest teacher you???ve ever met. Nope. Nothing like that at all. Just plain, boring, Pacific High.
Why is school so boring? Why can???t something cool happen? Why can???t the teachers get some new material to teach us? Students might actually like going to school if there was something fun about it.
I see a rock on the sidewalk and kick it angrily. It sails through the air and lands in a bunch of bushes. Nina is at soccer practice and I didn???t feel like waiting for her, so I???m walking home, alone.
As soon as that thought passes through my head I notice that inevitable feeling of being watched. I stop walking and look at the ground. This is pointless. Once we finish high school, Nina and I will rent an apartment in California and go to a good collage there. We???ve been saving up for it. We have enough, we just need to finish high school first. That is, if it doesn???t bore us to death first.
I look up and notice that my house is only a couple yards away and run the rest of the way home, happy at the thought of being able to lie down on my comfy bed. I grab my keys out of my bookbag and unlock the door.
???Mom, I???m home! You here???? No one answers me.
???Guess she???s still at work.??? I mumble to myself.
I walk into the kitchen, grab a coke from the fridge, and head up to my room. I lie on my bed and grab my homework out of my bookbag.
???Thank god it???s only math today.??? I open my coke, take a sip, and then proceed to do my homework.
-???Katie, Dinner???s ready!??? I groan and roll over, while rubbing my eyes. God, when did I fall asleep? I glance at my homework. Well, at least I finished that. I get up and stretch, then proceed to walk downstairs.
???Hey mom, How long have I been asleep???? I asked while rubbing my eyes some more.
???I got home about an hour ago and you were already asleep then, so at least an hour. How was school???? She asked after giving me a kiss on the head.
???School was school. Boring.??? I said while taking a seat in front of the plate that had spaghetti piled onto it.
???Hope you???re hungry.??? She grabbed a fork from the drawer and handed it to me.
I thanked her and took the fork. She looked expectantly at me.
???Go on, try it.???
I took a bite of it and swallowed. It was nothing special. It tasted how it was supposed to taste, like spaghetti.
???It???s great mom, thanks.??? I gave her a small smile as I took another bite.
She grinned and started to exit the room before quickly turning back around.
???Oh, You got something in the mail, I found it on our doorstep. Did you order something online???? She asked with a confused expression on her face.
???I didn???t order anything, why????
She glanced worriedly at the box.
???Oh, no reason.??? She walked silently from the room without another word.
???That is so cool!??? Nina said after I explained what had been in the box.
Turns out that it was a renaissance costume. It was a long red and gold dress that felt and looked like silk. It had a black sash and long red sleeves. It looked like it was made for a queen. What was even more surprising was the note, or rather invitation, that I found with the dress. It was addressed to me..
Dear Katie,
We would like to formally invite you to the vampire ball.
It is a ball in which we celebrate Halloween.
There will be dancing and music as well as entertainment.
The ball will be held on midnight of Halloween.
It will be at the Scott???s mansion, which they have so generously agreed to let us use.
Should you decide to accept this invitation, your attire has been provided.
This is a very special invitation so we ask you to not bring anyone but yourself.
We wish you eternal happiness.
???Aww, I wish I could go.??? Nina was pouting in her chair after I explained that it was exclusive.
???Why did they invite you? And who are they anyways???? She questioned, obviously wanting to know who they are so she can go beg for an invite.
???I???m not so sure myself, Nina and I have no clue as to who they are. It???s kind of suspiscious, don???t you think????
???Well, of course, but that doesn???t make it any less cool! Are you going to go???? She was staring at me intently, probably not wanting me to go without her.
???I guess so, I mean, they bought this dress for me, so I don???t think I have a choice.??? She looked a little disappointed, but instantly brightened when Nate walked by and gave her a small wave.
???I don???t get why you won???t ask him out already. I can tell you like him.??? She blushed and looked around quickly, checking to see if anybody heard.
???Because I???m not sure if he likes me or not.??? She started to pick at her food with her fingers sadly.
???You won???t know if you don???t ever try. Go ask him out!??? I encouraged with a big grin.
???Err-???
The bell rang.
???Wow, Nina, There???s no better time to say ???saved by the bell??? than now.???
I gathered my stuff and headed of to gym leaving a relieved Nina at the table.
